I photograph the aesthetic of the everyday, the compositions of our built environment: an inter-section of lines, a gesture, a balance of shape. I am fascinated by the beauty and stillness that can be found in our 24/7 society.
I avoid irony. Kitsch is too all-pervasive in American pop-culture; we are to be witty and smug; we are to have our tongue firmly in our cheek. Cleverness feels cheap. The quick, the disingenuous. These things are in conflict with my camera; twelve frames. Each image slow, measured, earned.
I do not elevate, sentimentalize or formalize my subject. I am recording a sense of time and place. Mundane reality is full of wonder and brilliance. I try to capture pieces of it.
